If NPR wants to fire Williams for what he said on air — that he’s nervous when he flies with Muslims, whether or not he should be — that’s one thing. But don’t imply there’s a whole bunch of other things — and then refuse to say what they are. That’s slimy.
Everyone is entitled to face their accusers. NPR owes its listeners an accounting of what its standards are. That requires willingness to be forthright about what Juan Williams said that violated NPR’s sacred standards.
What it is doing right now is McCarthyism, pure and simple: Juan has said many things that violate our standards, we just won’t tell you what they are.
