As we head into the home stretch, it looks like New York’s 4th Congressional District is in play. Democrat apparatchiks are increasingly worried about the dwindling reelection prospects of seven-term liberal incumbent Carolyn McCarthy, who is facing a tough challenge by conservative Nassau Country legislator Fran Becker.
They’re right to be worried: Here’s a Becker campaign spot that catches McCarthy trying to have it both ways on taxes:
By the way, Eric Cantor was in the district this morning to hold a town-hall meeting with Becker. Given the dozens of other competitive House races that could use the attention, you’ve got to believe the GOP whip wouldn’t be here if the race didn’t have upset written all over it.
It would be nice if this race went the GOP's way after all the lost opportunities resulting from the state party's stunning incompetence. First, there was the failure to recruit Giuliani and Pataki to run for either governor or senator (vs. Gillibrand), which would have been two sure pickups if not for each man still harboring delusional presidential ambitions for 2012. Then there was the ugly three-way primary circus in the NY-1 House race, which resulted in the nomination of a Conservative Party-backed, outsourcing RINO candidate in Randy Altschuler and a probable loss to incredibly unpopular liberal Democrat incumbent Tim Bishop. Finally, there's the Paladino debacle, which will stunningly end with the election of a career Democrat politician after the previous two governors, both Democrats, were ultimately forced from office due to rampant scandal and corruption.
New York State was ripe with pickup opportunities for the GOP this year (governor, Senate, House) but the state party's failure to recruit strong, conservative candidates unforgivably squandered most of these.
