For Sanity — and Fatwas

Salman Rushdie took exception to a performance by Cat Stevens / Yusuf Islam at the “Rally to Restore Sanity.” Why? Because Yusuf had on several occasions indicated his support for fatwa on Salman Rushdie — i.e. his belief that Rushdie deserved to die for insulting the Prophet.

Rushdie reportedly reached out to Jon Stewart on the topic, and relayed this summation to Observer columnist Nick Cohen:

I spoke to Jon Stewart about Yusuf Islam’s appearance. He said he was sorry it upset me, but really, it was plain that he was fine with it. Depressing.

It’s a wild world.
