John McCormack ably defends him from some of the foolish criticisms Senate insiders are lobbing at him. I would quibble with only one point McCormack makes. Reid’s efforts to trash Lowden before the Nevada primary suggest that he feared her more than Angle (a point Kathleen Parker made right before the primary), and I think his judgment in this matter should be given some weight. To some extent, he was able to pick the opponent he wanted.

P.S. I think Taranto is right. I also have a longer post about the bizarre recriminations game now being played.

Trent Lott and Lindsey Graham can shove it. One of the things that impressed me early on with Demint was his unwillingness to play by the beltway rules. I did NOT vote for the same-old same-old in Washington. Being from WV I'm still epically ticked Raese didn't win, but Mollohan's old seat was won by a Republican, so that's some frosting on the cake!

The difference between Sen. Demint and most of his colleagues in the GOP caucus is simply that while the latter group is happy if there are 51 senators with the letter R after their name, Demint would prefer that there be 51 senators who actually could be counted on to vote for conservative Republican principles. So would I. I am sorry if a poorly vetted Tea-Party candidate might have cost an opportunity to gain a GOP Senate seat in Delaware. But why should we really care if Mike Castle had the special letter R if that did not mean anything? Castle at age 70 was much like Bob Dole in 1996 who wanted the GOP nomination as some sort of gold watch to recognize his work at the end of his career. Castle would not have done much of anything to advance the cause of freedom for future generations in Delaware but he sure would have warmed the seat well. His vote to give a gavel to McConnell and other wannabe GOP committee chairs would have been little more than a gesture to erect a few speed bumps to Obama and then Castle would have corrected that liberal sin by giving a crucial vote to Obama at the very next opportunity.
