In July, here on NRO, I tried to imagine what a nuclear Iran would mean — for the Middle East, the U.S., and the rest of the world.

A nuclear Iran would be a hegemonic Iran. Its neighbors would either acquire nuclear weapons themselves — setting off a proliferation cascade — or seek to appease Khamenei and Ahmadinejad.

The jihadis waging war against America would be emboldened — and protected by Iran’s nuclear umbrella.

There are probably many worse ramifications we can’t yet imagine.

Negroponte sees none of this? Not surprising, really, but distressing nonetheless.
