This is from a man who just contributed $50 to our post-election fundraising drive: “I remember one year back in the ‘90′s when I was able to give $1,000 to NR. Things are different now — I earn $11.32/hour as a lifeguard, broiling under the summer sun and freezing in the winter winds and rains. $50 is almost a full day’s pay after taxes. I hope it helps. I’ll try to do better next year so I can give more.”

I don't understand why you're doing a pledge drive. I thought begging for money was NPR's domain. Why aren't you just charging a membership fee and going with a pay wall? Surely in the marketplace, the ideas expressed here would stand on their own? right?
