This lede from the New York Times gets it exactly right. Whenever I think about a bunch of hipsters and trustafarian adherents to a dead-letter ideology lounging around a piece of prem-o West Village real estate to discuss the problem of false consciousness, I think about how fundamentally serious the whole enterprise is.
