‘A Good Dude’

Text

Ladies and gentlemen, here is one more on the Battle of the Bulge. Thanks to all those who have written. A reader says,

My dad was captured at the Bulge. He was 20. Lost 1/3 of his bodyweight. Got appendicitis. The German camp doctors operated on him and saved his life. I have the original telegrams to his parents. “We regret to inform you that your son is missing in action.” “We are pleased to inform you that your son is a confirmed POW.” “We are pleased to inform you that your son has been liberated by American forces and is in good health.” Then the telegram from my dad to his parents: “Back in the good old USA, home in two days.”

He died of natural causes April 21, 2006. He was a good dude.
