Coburn and Crapo Back Debt Commission Plan

by Robert Costa

Washington — Sen. Tom Coburn (R., Okla.) and Sen. Mike Crapo (R., Idaho) are backing the recommendations of the President’s National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform.

“We are at a day of reckoning,” Coburn said at a press conference. “This is a starting point, that’s all this is.” He will push for more spending cuts and flatter tax rates beyond the recommendations. “You pass this package, then you do more.”

Is Coburn worried about how anti-tax activists will respond to his support of the plan? “Our obligation is to the country at whole, not to special-interest groups,” he replied.

Coburn also said he’d like to see Rep. Paul Ryan’s “Roadmap” for fiscal reform utilized as the debate moves forward.
