‘A Big Banana’

by Andrew Stiles

Washington — Speaking at the final meeting of President Obama’s fiscal commission earlier today, commission co-chair and former Sen. Alan Simpson (R., Wy.) described the significance of what the commission had accomplished (despite failing to approve the plan), in a way that only he can:

“We took a big banana and threw it into the gorilla cage, and the gorilla picked it up, like they do — they peel it, mash it, play with it, but they will eat some. And that’s where we are right now because…many pieces of this [plan] will be digested and nourish this country.”
