Jonah, to the extent that Scopes’s prosecutor, the state of Tennessee, was concerned about the passages you cite, it would have to have been with distinct qualifications: the state was firmly segregationist. It’s also worth remembering that William Jennings Bryan himself was a politician who appeared comfortable with segregation and treated the Ku Klux Klan with kid gloves.
