Austria v. Turkey

by Jonah Goldberg

This has been sent to me by a bunch of folks.

For what it’s worth, this is part of a quick take from a friend of mine who follows these sorts of things pretty closely.
Yeah, that’s a pretty fantastic rant. It’s off in several points, principally that the Austrians did ask for Turkish guestworkers and that priests aren’t murdered every year in Turkey. That said, they are murdered often enough that it’s a recognizable problem. The Turkish government obviously knows it’s a problem, because they consistently cover up the fact that a lot of these people are religious fanatics. You only usually see them described as “mentally ill.” I don’t know that that’s particularly sinister—more like I’m not sure that they actually know how to deal with the problem. Frankly, though, I’m glad to see Europeans actually discussing these things, although they’ve kept it outside the bounds of acceptable discourse for so long, it’s festered way longer than it should have, and you have some nasty folks involved. I don’t know anything about that guy or the BZÖ. I’ll have to do some reading to see if he’s a xenophobe or if he’s just a ticked-off regular guy…..
