Kosovo’s Organ Trail

Text

Here’s a little more this morning on those elections in Kosovo. The Daily Telegraph profiles Kosovo’s new prime minister, Hashim Thaci:

A draft report, released a day after Kosovo’s election commission said Mr Thaci’s party won the first post-independence election on Sunday, accused Western powers of complicity in ignoring the activities of the crime ring headed by Mr Thaci.”Thaci and these other ‘Drenica Group’ members are consistently named as ‘key players’ in intelligence reports on Kosovo’s mafia-like structures of organised crime,” the report said.”We found that the ‘Drenica Group’ had as its chief – or, to use the terminology of organised crime networks, its ‘boss’ – the renowned political operator … Hashim Thaci.”

The report states that Mr Thaci exerted “violent control” over the heroin trade.

Not to mention organ trafficking, political assassinations, and other sundry instruments of Kosovan statecraft, according to an investigation led by the Council of Europe.

And speaking of organ trafficking, as one does, the Telegraph also carries a story about the Kosovo Liberation Army — Thaci’s political base — and its role in abductions and kidney-looting. We bombed Belgrade for these guys?
