BREAKING: Reid Caves on Omnibus

Speaking now on the Senate floor, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) says he is “sorry and disappointed” to announce that he does not have the votes for the omnibus spending package. Instead, he will work with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) to draft a temporary continuing resolution to fund the government into early next year.

Reid says nine Republican senators approached him today to tell him that while they would like to see the bill passed, they could not vote for it. He did not reveal the names of the nine. A top Senate source tells National Review Online that “it looks like Harry Reid buckled under the threat of Republicans reading [the bill] aloud.”

Reid says he intends to file cloture tonight on the DREAM Act and repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, with an aim toward holding up-or-down votes on Saturday.

And there was much rejoicing.

In the past this would have been passed, even in December of 1993 but the political climate has changed with the people making their voices heard in greater numbers and and in a variety of ways. Thanks tea party!

This is a trap...

The GOP should not let DADT get cloture tonight... make them pass the tax deal in the house first... this would waste more time too.

The DADT bill should be amended to deal with this congressional report pushing women into greater combat roles.

The DREAM Act is ten times more of a nightmare for the country than was the Omnibus. Hoping very much that it is just more theater from the Demunists and not anything that has any chance of passing.

Any Republicans who vote to so impale the country will have rather large targets on their backs come primary season.

Bad news - it would have been better if this dragged on for a few more days until Congress goes home. Now Reid has time to try to ram through assorted other junk bills.

This is scary, 47 republicans - 9 rinos = 38. You need 41 to stop the dems. Got alot of work to do in 2 years.

Anytime Harry Reid is "sorry and disappointed" after trying one of his stunts, it's a good day for America.

Crocodile tears. They are just biding their time.

If they pass the DREAM act, they know they will have the majority back shortly - after importing millions of new Democrat voters.

Sure there are no other tricks he can try? Wouldn't put it past him. If true, I'll prepare the stake and maybe we can drive it through the heart of this monstrosity.

What can the Republicans do now to get rid of the DREAM Act?
That should be the next bill they stop from being passed!

Good job Republicans! There seems to be an adult in DC. Don't slack now.

Jim DeMint is my hero. I have never been so sick of democrats and their corrupt ploys in my life. I will be so glad when the new congress takes over. I just don't think it can be worse.

Did the Republicans who talked to Reid promise to vote for DADT and Dream Act if Reid dropped the Omnibus bill? I guess we'll find out.

I think all Bill should have to be read aloud before they are voted on.

I don't trust the Dems.
They will try something else.
It's not over till the new members are sworn in.

Hmmmm...I'll feel a lot better AFTER Jan 4th when the 112th is officially in. If Reid pulled it, then he can always put it back on the floor after he tries his swing at DADT and DREAM.

Let's hope for three strikes this Christmas Season!

In other news - I was saddened by the failure of the Pomeroy Amendment and passage of the tax deal, I had hoped it would go down in flames along with the tatters that remain of The One's credibility as a leader...looks like Obama gets another trillion dollars in stimulus for Christmas in his stocking =^(

Absolutely thrilling. Hats off to McConnell, McCain, and DeMint and the rest of the Republican senators.
