In the past couple of weeks, there have been several negative press stories about Haley Barbour. According to online journalists, at least some of the material originated with opposition researchers. But whose? One possibility is the Democratic National Committee. It is very early in the 2012 cycle for a national committee to try to take out someone in the other party who hasn’t even decided whether to run. But perhaps the Democrats are relying on a “pick your opponent” strategy, undercutting potentially strong GOP nominees in hopes that the party will choose a weak one. An alternative theory is that the oppo is coming from the camp of another would-be Republican candidate. Such things happen: civil wars are nasty.
