House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R., Va.):
“I was deeply horrified to learn today of the shooting of Representative Gabrielle Giffords and others in Tucson. Our thoughts and prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords and her family, her staff, and the residents of Tucson on this sad day. As this serious situation continues to develop, I remain in close communication with leaders of both parties, the Speaker’s office and the Sergeant at Arms. We will remain in constant communication regarding any schedule changes.”
Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin:
My sincere condolences are offered to the family of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today’s tragic shooting in Arizona.
On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice.
It is absolutely sick the number of leftists who have put the blame for this on Palin, specifically, and conservatism, in general, already.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseYours are the first partisan words I've read. Congrats, Robot.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWow, Palin's statement is about as hollow as it gets.
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuse"They really need to realize that the rhetoric and firing people up, and, you know, even things for example, we're on Sarah Palin's targeted list, but the thing is, that the way that she has it depicted has the crosshairs of a gunsight over our district. when people do that, you gotta realize there's consequences to that action."
- Gabriele Giffords
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseCan we at least agree that using gunsight imagery when talking about 'targetting' the opponents on the other side, which not intrinsically threatening, is really not a very good idea?

It's silly to say Palin has blood on her hands. This was most likely a nut; this could even be a left-wing nut, considering that Giffords was known to have a pretty conservative voting record and often bucked the Democrats. Those prematurely blaming this on Palinare foolish.
However, it is an object lesson on how careful people should be with public statements, especially any that suggest violence--or even those that suggest that our ideological opponents are in fact our enemies. They are not.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThe language of the right and conservatives wrapped in the glory of the flag and the constitution falls upon a those in their group with uneven but forewarned impact. The words of the patriotic conservative is turgid and inflammatory by choice and well documented. They call to arms. They invoke the second amendment and they are not ashamed. In their magnificent desire to save this nation, by fire if necessary. They will burn the village in order to save it. Don't retreat ...reload. Traitors and Tyrants are in our midst. The tree of liberty must be watered with the blood etc, etc.
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuseits such a odd coincidence how she was Palin's list of 20 democratic congress reps that needed to go....
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseColonel, they don't miss a chance. If they can set the narrative, it doesn't matter who get hurt.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseGiffords is a blue-dog, conservative Democrat. Only are far left loon would be angry with her.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI'm not sure if the Republican party ever had any moral fiber, but they certainly haven't in my lifetime. It's one thing to be fiscally conservative, anti-tax, pro-military, etc. But to join hands with a band of crackpots like the Tea Party and Christians is a hypocrisy that brings down the whole house. You can believe what you want about whether the hate mongering of your most public voices had a role in Giffords' assassination. But you can't deny that hate is tearing our country apart.

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThe left is the left; they hate our country and it's founding principles. They whine and groan about the U.S. Constitution being read. So it is 100% guaranteed they will try to blame 'true all-American, I-love-this-country-citizens' such as us for the evil act of a person who chose to be evil.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI admire Rep. Giffords for having these open and public meetings. Our elected officials need to do this more. Unfortunately because of this horrid act, people are less likely to be involved with such meetings. I'm keeping all of these Americans in my prayers. My heart especially goes out to a 9 year old child whose laughter is no more. God comfort her family, for her soul has returned to Him forever.
Surprised, Colonel?
Shep Smith was almost licking his chops when he first believed the shooter to be a right-winger. After the You Tube page, the shift was obvious.
They thought they had another McVeigh opportunity, and actually appear disappointed that they don't.
Its all about hatred.
As for YOU Sunnyside, get a life.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI had a friend who just posted its Palin's fault. So ready to blame rather than seeing just how sick this is. The shooting in Tuscon is certainly a human tragedy. What's even sadder is that no significant facts have been released regarding a motive for the shooting yet throughout the internet you already have people assuming this is a political catalyst for civil war. Let's hear facts first before pointing fingers.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseSunnyside, obviously you haven't been to the Huffpo, DailyKos, or DU yet. Or the WaPo or NYT comments sections.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseShooter does not seem to fit a political profile, but Sarah Palin's utterly deranged and tasteless crosshairs ad imagery has come true. That kind of violent imagery has no place in our discourse. What she has to say is of less than zero significance, unless it's an apology.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseAny chance to blame the Tea Party and/or Sarah Palin for this crime will be taken--the media has a template.
Heck, look at Nancy Pelosi this week: blaming BUSH for the Democrat party's 2010 losses. So the template is written.
Sadly, even FOX NEWS appears to employ "news" readers who go along with that nonsense.
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuse@Sunnyside...I actually learned of this story on facebook. And it was my liberal friends throwing around words like "Tea Bagger" and blaming Palin. There's no shortage of partisan acrimony from either side, even on this horror.
(Yes, my experience is not remotely representative of anything except my own experience.)
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseMay the wounded survive and get well soon - God bless them all. My prayers go out to those who lost their life in this horrible, senseless act. May the person who perpetrated it receive just retribution for his hate of his fellow man.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseSorry Sunny it is U-G-L-Y on the comment sections on many of the newspapers all blaming the right. NRO has the nicest and most sincere comments from anything I've read.
Regardless of anyone's political leanings this is a time for prayer for those affected by this tragedy.
