Discourse about Discourse about Discourse

by Ramesh Ponnuru

The advice to be as accurate, fair, and charitable in one’s remarks is always in season. But am I the only one to find something narcissistic in the pundit class’s fixation over the last few days on — all together now — “the tone of our public discourse”? Especially to the extent that this conversation dwells on media figures, doesn’t it reflect an overestimation on the part of pundits of the power and importance of their own words?
