Maddow Uses Satirical Piece as Source

Text

Last night, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow reported that some conservatives were calling on Sarah Palin to advocate a U.S. invasion of Egypt.

Reading from a piece on Christwire.org, Maddow quoted this part of the article: “The escalating crisis in Egypt could become a defining moment for Sarah Palin. Gov. Palin needs to speak out publicly and forcibly for an American-led invasion of Egypt to protect our interest in North Africa. As the largest recipient of foreign aid next to Israel, the U.S. has a tremendous investment in keeping Egypt stable and relatively terrorist free. Upon her direction, other western nations are sure to join us.”

Maddow, who did emphasize that Sarah Palin herself had called for no such invasion, laughed about the article.

But the joke’s on her: Christwire.org is a satirical site that mocks conservative Christians, a fact that Maddow apparently learned a few hours after her show aired. Her show tweeted that “The bad news about a free and open internet? Sometimes you get had by brilliant satirists. Christwire: 1 TRMS: 0.”
