The Gipper Humbles San Donaldson

People often ask me for my favorite Reagan story or anecdote.  That’s a tough one; there are so many good candidates.  I’ve settled on this one, only about 15 seconds long.

Sam Donaldson. Now there's a man who was born for local TV.

That was 1,000,000 on the scale of awsome!

That is certainly one of my fondest recollections of Reagan.

I just love how quickly he replied with such a witty answer.

Part of what makes that clip so funny is how tediously serious Sam Donaldson was -- in what was, at bottom, not a question but an attack. But Reagan was simply above all that.

It might surprise some of you to know that old Sammy boy has some seriously conservative friends in the business. He's also not beyond lampooning himself and joking around onstage with the likes of a certain somebody's nephew. Follow the link below and download the video of the MRC's 2004 Dishonor Awards and you'll see what I mean.

And Reagan did it without a teleprompter!

Ha! I just got done watching Howie Kurtz interviewing Donaldson and John Fund (WSJ) on "Reliable Sources" and Howie played that clip for them. Donaldson's response? "Game, set, match." Great stuff and a nice bit of insight on Reagan from the two interviewees.

Hey, Donaldson is a good work-a-day journalist. He was a member of that Band of Gerbils know as the White House press corps. He asked hard questions. He was paid to do that. I don't think what he did reflected his ideology.

Much, anyway.
