Second Time Around, PATRIOT Act Succeeds

by Daniel Foster

Requiring a mere majority this time around, the House has approved a temporary extension of a number of controversial provisions in the PATRIOT Act, by a vote of 275-144. Twenty-seven Republicans joined 117 Democrats in opposing the extension. Sixty-four Democrats joined 211 Republicans in the affirmative.

A motion to recommit the extension failed in the House, 186-234, with two Republicans joining the yeas.
