Columbia Students Heckle Iraq Veteran

The New York Post reports:

Columbia University students heckled a war hero during a town-hall meeting on whether ROTC should be allowed back on campus.

“Racist!” some students yelled at Anthony Maschek, a Columbia freshman and former Army staff sergeant awarded the Purple Heart after being shot 11 times in a firefight in northern Iraq in February 2008. Others hissed and booed the veteran.

Maschek, 28, had bravely stepped up to the mike Tuesday at the meeting to issue an impassioned challenge to fellow students on their perceptions of the military.

“It doesn’t matter how you feel about the war. It doesn’t matter how you feel about fighting,” said Maschek. “There are bad men out there plotting to kill you.”

Here here Staff Sergeant Maschek! His service helped ensure the rights of the nitwits who booed and hissed at him.

A soldier who has been shot 11 times isn't going to be intimidated by a bunch of self-righteous, dimwitted dunderheads.

It sounds like Sgt Maschek clearly demonstrated the character of a soldier. Way to go!

So, they boo and hiss, essentially spitting on the guy who ensures their right to boo and hiss and spit on others, and then claim the mantle of "patriotic" for themselves. Stay classy ivy leaguers.

One of the nitwits in the article showed the typical pattern of the left. DADT was originally a compromise from a Democratic President, but it had to go.

Fine it's gone. Oh wait, that doesn't matter because they discriminate against trannies.

Then if the armed forces ditch that it'll be something else - need to fill LGBT quotas in the ranks of colonels and above perhaps.

It will never end.

And of course the mass media and the left wing blogoshphere are publicly excoriating this latest example of incivility in our public discourse. Of course they are, aren't they?

How sad that intelligent, well educated young people are so lacking in basic human traits like civility, respect and appreciation. And what kind of defect of mentality motivated the accusation of racism?

So, will Columbia U President Lee Bollinger pursue any sort of disciplinary action, even a reprimand, against those obnoxious twits? Past experience suggests that he will not.

How about this?

The Columbia students were indeed rude. And Maschek was placed in a position to get shot at by an American administration that totally screwed up.

The reason those Iraqis were out plotting to kill Maschek and his comrades is because they were there.

Iraq is a TRILLION dollar, TENS OF THOUSANDS of American casualties, HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of Iraq causalities rat hole.

A nation that forgets its heroes is a nation destined to be forgotten. It seems that the Columbia University undergraduates are expending active energy in forgetting...Booing a man who sustained 11 wounds under the arms of our nation is the very height of boorish and unseemly behavior unfitting of those who attend an elite university whose motto is "In lumine Tuo videbimus lumen" (trans: In thy light, we see light). Let's hope that they do see the light one day.

Gee, I wonder if the left will criticize those students like they criticized Saxby Chambliss for his ad against Max Cleland?

Who was it that said something along the lines of: "You may not like war, but war is very fond of you?" Lenin? Stalin?

Columbia will continue to be a national disgrace just as it has been for decades. Remember, it was Columbia where FDR mined his Brain Trust, including Rex (The Red)Tugwell and who gave a chair to the radical Edward Said, not to mention, produced Barack Hussein Obama, Jr.

Columbia is, and always has been, a hot bed of Communist/Marxist/statist thought. No federal student loans should ever be allowed to be used at Columbia.

These are the types of people that the prestigious "Ivy League" schools produce now? Wow... that's sad. Certainly a bunch of disrespectful clowns. I would love to see one of these idiots walk 10 feet in the shoes of a soldier.

You really want to make them cry? Stick 'em in a room with a couple of those head choppers that the good Sgt. was talking about.

@300 -

As it so happens, my freshman year in college? Co-ed bathrooms. Guess what? Taught us to treat the girls like sisters, not heifers in heat. Strange but true. Also, girl across the hall? Pregnant - boyfriend back home. Carried the baby to term, delivered over intersession and gave the baby up for adoption. Still can't believe what I learned in 13 weeks in that dorm. They thought they were making liberals - We all voted for Ronnie and we came out conservatives (just don't tell the profs).

I never bought the notion that our soldiers consciously fight for the "right" of nitwits to treat them badly, or the "right" of the nitwits to rail against having a strong military.

A warrior's survival instincts are too well developed to entertain such nonsense. They forebear the ivory tower fools largely because the warriors are the ones with true discipline. Of course, they are free to be similarly foolish, themselves, but only very few soldiers are.

Most warriors have proved by their actions that they know better than the educated idiots who are so enamored of the world's anti-American bureaucrats, kleptocrats, and dictatorial tyrants. I almost wonder if the idiots are always so angry because they somehow manage to perceive that they exist only with the forbearance of the military strength they ignorantly hate so much.

But, in that this forbearance relies to some extent on the honest, shared participation of citizens in our security, the constant hectoring of the nitwits will someday wear thin; and that's really going to be tough if you're a typically craven leftist.

I don't usually watch Extreme Home Makeover on ABC, but I did tonight because the crew built a handicap accessible home - and hosted a wedding - for Staff Sargeant Patrick Ziegler who was critically wounded by an Islamic terrorist on November 5, 2009 at Fort Hood. Staff Sargeant Ziegler was in the line of fire that day because he was sent back from Iraq in advance of his unit to attend Officers Candidate School. He was being processed after his return when political correctness in the military interrupted his plans and almost ended his life.

The Staff Sargeant was shot four times, in rapid succession. One side of his skull was blown away and his shoulder and hip were seriously injured. As a result of his injuries, he lost the use of his left arm and his left leg is so badly damaged that he can walk only very short distances with the help of a cane. The doctors initially referred to Staff Sargeant Ziegler as number 14 because they didn't expect him to survive, but survive he did because of his will to live and the love of his life.

I know Staff Sargeant Ziegler would disagree, but those cowards at Columbia don't deserve the sacrifice he and so many others make on their behalf and it's time for the rest of us to make sure they know it. Americans whose political views prevent them from expressing respect and appreciation for those who protect them and provide them with the freedom they enjoy should not be shielded by the First Amendment. Legally they have the right to speak, but morally they have nothing of value to offer.
