Since the beginning of the uprising in Egypt and the expected power shift in favor of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamic world has rallied around the Brotherhood and demanded that the West engage with them. But a crack in that unity appeared today when Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak said that the Muslim Brotherhood “shouldn’t be part of the process as long as they don’t reject violence and extremism.”
“Anyone who wants to be part of the political process should adopt values that are compatible with democracy,” Najib said in an interview in Istanbul, where he is speaking at a conference on moderation. “It’s not just about having a vote and choosing your leaders; it’s also part of imparting the right values for democracy to work, because there are failed democracies as well.”
Najib said he has “some concerns, deep concerns” about Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the Muslim Brotherhood’s spiritual leader. Those concerns center on Qaradawi’s support and justification for terrorism, which carries a great deal of weight given Qaradawi’s credibility as an Islamic scholar. It is exactly that type of Muslim leader that has led the Middle East astray, according to Najib. “We have lost a lot of ground to the extremists in the Middle East.”
He offered his own country as a model to emerging Islamic governments in the Middle East, saying that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has described Malaysia as “modern, progressive, and moderate.”
“We shouldn’t want to impose on people, but people are welcome to study our experience and how we’ve done things in Malaysia. Perhaps it could be useful in their country,” he said.
Too many leaders, Najib said, misunderstand moderation. “I think they’re not paying enough attention to the values associated with being a moderate,” he said. “Moderate doesn’t mean that you’re a wimp — far from it. It means that you’ve chosen a path because you believe that’s the only way for global harmony and peace.”

Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak moderate?
Only if "moderate" means "doesn't wish to be reminded of his anti-Semitic comments".

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThis article is written in the context of
A) $20 million contract between APCO worldwide and the Malaysian government that has been widely reported and is documented in FARA records. Part of that campaign is to promote the Malaysian government in the US and rehabilitate the Malaysian prime Minister's image which is badly tarnished by a number of scandals including the alleged involvement in the murder of a Mongolian woman in 2006. The other part of the APCO effort is to undermine the support that Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim carries in Washington DC among policy makers and the media.
B) Anwar Ibrahim as a well regarded Muslim democrat has been calling for broader engagement with all political parties in the Muslim world so long as they renounce violence but has urged the US and EU to discard age old prejudices and side with reformers on all sides of the political divide. This is of course vehemently opposed by neoconservatives as well as the pro-Israeli lobby which stands to benefit more from America's continued overt support of dictators in the Middle East. Although he has been criticized for his belief that engagement with groups like the Brotherhood is essential, these statements have in no way undermined his relationships with Republican or Democratic parties in the US.
APCO has used his alignment as an Islamist to try and smear Anwar Ibrahim's name in DC and drive a wedge between him and his friends on Right and the Left. It looks like certain writers like Rachel Motte, Josh Trevino and Seth Mandel have all of a sudden taken a deep interest in Malaysian affairs such that they would endorse Najib's leadership without any critical look at the clear abuses of power taking place under his watch. There has been no end to their attacks on Anwar although it does not appear to have had much impact. Anwar is still able to secure high level meetings with the administration including as recently as February with officials from the State Department, White House and National Security Council.
Therefore, Najib's statement, which is not really based on fact but on the mythology of Muslim Brotherhood violence, is almost certainly being made to further this effort to differentiate himself from Anwar. To Washington DC, which Najib needs the support of in order to successfully convict and jail Anwar on sodomy charges this year, Najib wants to be the moderate reformer. and Najib/Apco want Anwar to be the radical Islamic fundamentalist.
This comment by Najib will likely backfire in his own party. UMNO is not known for its moderate views and to the extent that UMNO leaders are critical of US policy in the middle East, Najib looks weaker. Mahathir, who is the albatross on Najib's back, will probably criticize Najib as well for taking a position that is seen to be subservient to US views. And the Ikhwan itself will generally lose respect for Najib around the Muslim world which impacts his ability to have any kind of influence or positive reputation.
As for Malaysia being a model example - that will also be hard to prove. Malaysia banned non Muslim use of the word Allah, banned yoga, canes people regularly for adultery and drinking beer, declared Islam superior to other religions, arrests and detains without trial political dissidents, allows hundreds if not thousands of people to be killed while in detention, facilitates human trafficking, etc etc. I dont think there is much to be gained right now from the Malaysian example.
Furthermore, that Najib has ignored and not supported the clear clamor for freedom and justice taking place throughout the Middle East shows how insecure he is about the domestic situation. In Malaysia the demographics are not too different from the Middle East. Large numbers of unemployed voters under the age of 30 who are tech saavy, get their information from blogs and facebook and are well aware of what is happening in the rest of the world.

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseNajib is the biggest hypocrite of all. In Malaysia, they use all kind of underhand tactics to restrict freedom of information, media, right to assemble peacefully and practice widespread policy of divide n rule policy to rule over various races in the country. He was also never investigated thoroughly for his alleged involvement in the cold blood murder of Mongolian lady Altantuya who acted as a French interpreter in the useless purchase of Scorpene submarine from French company though his two personal bodyguards were convicted for the murder. In Malaysian parliament, they acknowledged a commission of USD 133 million was paid to a company owned by a close associate of Najib but it was claimed to be for services rendered n not bribe. The prosecutor, the judge, the investigating agencies r all controlled by the executives headed by najib n so none can touch him. This is true Malaysia n yet he want Malaysia to be the model for whole Muslim world. Shame on u Najib
