The AP reports:
WASHINGTON — The FBI has arrested a 20-year-old Saudi student in Texas suspected of planning a terrorist attack using explosive chemicals. The FBI says his possible targets included the Dallas home of former President George W. Bush.
Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari, attending college near Lubbock, Texas, was charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. Federal prosecutors say he had been researching online how to construct an improvised explosive device using several chemicals as ingredients.
Federal authorities say Aldawsari’s diary indicated the young man had been plotting an attack for years and obtained a scholarship so he could come directly to the United State to carry out jihad.
Aldawsari is expected to appear in federal court in Lubbock on Friday morning.
Not clear how far it got, but looks like Aldawsari certainly had intent to act.
Once again, economic and social circumstances have driven a poor, undereducated Muslim into the grips of terrorism.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseHelp me out: is this one of those times where we don't dare draw any conclusions until all the facts are in (and sometimes, not even then), or should we go ahead and blame Sarah Palin's Facebook page?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI read the full article linked on Drudge and this situation is really disturbing. This guy has been here since 2008 and apparently planning a "jihad" event against Americans the entire time. More disturbing is how many more visitors from Muslim countries, on "student" visas are of a like mind? Fortunately some vigilant citizens reported his attempts to acquire dangerous materials to the authorities and they intervened.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbusePossibly he wanted to reinforce in President Bush that Islamic ideal of peace and brotherhood, and show his appreciation for all those Iraqis and Afghans who yearned to breath free in order to now enforce sharia while fleecing the US taxpayer.
Is there ANYONE in Washington with a functioning brain who will stop this insane lax immigration policy regarding Islamic and Middle Eastern people who do not share our values and sometimes mean us harm? If 9/11 didn't get their attention nothing will, not even this.
Larry-MSM blame on Palin of this(and also the who ever who did not replace the toilet paper in the office bathroom) in 3...2....1...
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThis story is really confusing me. I thought George Bush and Dick Cheney made up the whole idea of "terrorism" so they could go to Iraq and suck up all that oil and get Saddam for trying to kill Gee-Dubya's daddy. That's what they said on TV anyway. And the newspapers. And the internets. And on campus. Do ... do you think this "terrorism" might actually be ... *gulp* ... real???
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseYes, much of the blame for this poor young man's travails should of course go to Palin and Limbaugh, and some to economic circumstances. But let's not forget the critical role that anthropogenic global warming played here.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseAn overseas contingency operation... in Lubbock?
Geography sure is confusing these days.
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuse@Jay- terrorism is real-the problem is that it had nothing to with Iraq.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThis is a really odd story. He was charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction? Far as I know, WMD means an NBC weapon (Nuclear, Biological, or Chemical... in other words, "nukes, bugs or gas"). I wasn't aware that conventional explosives had been upgraded to WMD status, and as far as I can tell from the Drudge story, he was planning to make explosives, not chemical weapons. Why the "attempted use of a WMD" charge?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseRobin,
I think there was a chemical component.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseOnly important question: why isn't he dead yet?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWay to miss the point, RussellB!
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseFor some reason, this pops to mind:

I'm sure this is all a misunderstanding. The guy was probably just doing research for his own version of "Backyard Ballistics" (External Link
).
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseHas the New York Times released its list of all the haters on the left who are responsible for inciting violence against George Bush? Oh right, some of them work for the New York Times.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseHeckuva time to be refusing the fund the FBI at the rate it requested and needs. They have been forced to freeze hiring. They will be unable to replace critical employees who retire or leave. They have canceled New Agent Trainee classes for the rest of the year. All this just as the threat of homegrown terrorists has really started to tick up. There have been attempts or planned attacks on Chicago's Wrigley Field, NYC's Times Square, Portland's Christmas tree lighting ceremony, a recruiting station in Maryland, and a few more. I know we need budget cuts, but why is the FBI on the chopping block? The Department of Homeland Security is not, nor is the Department of Defense (outside of a few weapons programs.)
