“My colleagues and I have received substantial death threats today,” Wisconsin Sen. Randy Hopper tells National Review Online.
It isn’t the first time the GOP state senators have been threatened with violence. “We received ones last week prior to this as an attempt to try to get us to vote a certain way,” Hopper reports.
Via WisPolitics’ Budget Blog, here is the text of an e-mail sent to Wisconsin GOP senate majority leader Scott Fitzgerald after the vote (profanity not edited out in original):
Mr. Fitzgerald,
I want to make this perfectly clear. Because of your actions today and in the past couple of weeks I and the group of people that are working with me have decided that we’ve had enough. We feel that you and your republican dictators have to die. This is how it’s going to happen: I as well as many others know where you and your family live, it’s a matter of public records. We have all planned to assult you by arriving at your house and putting a nice little bullet in your head. However, this isn’t enough. We also have decided that this may not be enough to send the message. So we have built several bombs that we have placed in various locations around the areas in which we know that you frequent. This includes, your house, your car, the state capitol, and well I won’t tell you all of them because that’s just no fun. Since we know that you are not smart enough to figure out why this is happening to you we have decided to make it perfectly clear to you. If you and your goonies feel that it’s necessary to strip the rights of 300,000 people and ruin their lives, making them unable to feed, clothe, and provide the necessities to their families and themselves then We will “get rid of” (in which I mean kill) the 8 of you. Please understand that this does not include the heroic Senator that risked everything to go aganist what you and your goonies wanted him to do. The 8 includes the 7 senators and the dictator. We feel that it’s worth our lives becasue we would be saving the lives of 300,000 people. Please make your peace with God as soon as possible and say goodbye to your loved ones we will not wait any longer. Goodbye A**HOLE!!!!

I normally don't get overly worried about the random "I hate you and want you to die!" type of "threats" sent to public figures, because they're clearly just blowing off steam (inappropriately, of course, but the point is that they're not really "threats"). But this is so detailed, so calmly and dispassionately written that it seems to be a true, real threat. If I were to receive something like this, I would be very frightened for a long time to come, knowing that this whacko is out there. I hope the police find this person and locks them away for a nice long time.

First, this doesn't strike me as the typical harmless rant. Too much thought (well, more than normal) went into this letter. The warnings to get personal affairs in order and make peace with God indicates - to me - someone who is very rational and very serious.
Second, I want to see the President himself come out and denounce these actions. I want to hear Rachel Maddow and Co. forcefully denounce the use of threats like this. Is a little consistency too much to ask?

The media will of course also quickly demand that the unions take an unambiguous stand against violence, real or threatened.

I pretty much stopped once I hit my 7th birthday, but lets not go overboard in prosecuting this loser - that is something the left does. He needs to be arrested, spend 72 hours in the loony bin and have a psych exam. Assuming he has not taken any steps toward carrying this out, make him go to anger management class, hit him with a protective order and let him go. Even though he may not be able to clothe or feed himself if he has to pay for part of his pension and health costs is no reason for the taxpayers to spend 50k or more a year to take care of him.
