Is Gay Marriage an Economic Development Plan?
The arguments for gay marriage are getting ever stranger. The latest meme, launched simultaneously in Rhode Island (by the governor) and Indiana (by an executive for Cummins, Inc.) is that gay marriage will cause economic growth and/or that a state marriage amendment will retard job growth.
I looked at a number of lists of the top five states for job growth, and guess what? Most of them have marriage amendments, and none of them has gay marriage.
Bottom line: If your governor or your business leaders are seriously claiming that gay marriage is an economic-development plan — your state is in big trouble.
I pull out the data both in my syndicated column this week, and in greater detail here on the NOM blog.
