The Very Ecumenical G. F. Handel

Text

From Books & Culture: A Christian Review, a fascinating assessment of how Lutheran, Catholic, Anglican, secular, aristocratic, and commercial influences combined to shape a man with a serious claim to the title of England’s greatest composer. (It has always delighted me that Handel, venerated in the Victorian era as an icon of Englishness and the Anglican national religion, also composed the lovely Carmelite Vespers.)

H/t to Rev. Victor Lee Austin for the link.
