Gee, Derb, so Michael Barone is a “liberal”? Come on. And so stupid as not to know that immigration levels are affected by federal law? That’s even less tenable. I’m sure he knows this, but he also knows that such laws are not omnipotent and that actual immigration levels are determined by more than what Congress says is allowed — for example, the way those laws are enforced, and how attractive the current state of the economy makes it for employers and employees to break them. I doubt you disagree. In any event, the larger point in his excellent column — which I’m glad you linked to and which I hope folks will read — is that one has to be careful when extrapolating current demographic trends into the indefinite future.
