Rich: I don’t think you need to apologize for that remark at all. I do know why the good-and-occasionally-subsidy-seeking people of Iowa are reacting badly to supposedly being called “fools,” but in fact the correct construction is that our political class in general, and overclass posers like Trump in particular, regard the hard-working citizens of Iowa (and Indiana, and Kansas, and Nebraska, and . . . well, everywhere but Manhattan, Boston, SF, and D.C.) as generically belonging to the class of unenlightened. That is to say, fools. And the disgust citizens have toward our political class is exactly right. Iowans may be “fools,” but better a fool than a Beltway jacka**. Iowans are known as Bible readers. And what is it the Bible says about “foolishness”? “The foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men” (First Corinthians 1:25). I’ll go with Iowa, ethanol subsidies and all, over Trump any day.
