Wedding and War

The dress is the buzz, but Con Coughlin explains the groom’s significant wardrobe choice:

Prince William’s decision to wear the red tunic of the Irish Guards on his wedding day has reportedly disappointed some of his Royal Air Force colleagues. Only the helicopter wings above his left breast will denote his role his role as an officer in the RAF.

But his choice will provide an immense boost for the 1st Battalion Irish Guards, which is currently on operational deployment in Helmand province, Afghanistan. As the Queen prepares for her visit to Ireland, it is also a smart diplomatic move.

The prince’s uniform and the military ceremony today serve as a poignant reminder that, while the nation’s attention is directed towards a historic event at Westminster Abbey, the Armed Forces – including some of Prince William’s fellow officers in the RAF – are risking their lives in Libya and Afghanistan.

War is ugly and ignoble. Prince William’s fellow officers in the RAF – are blasting lives in Libya and Afghanistan to smithereens.

War should not be commingled with anything connected to God. William should have worn a suit.

Yeah, and maybe he wore it because it just looks sharper. Not as nice as the US Marine's dress blues though.

Steve,

That’s right… leave the fighting to the lumpenproletariat and let the aristocrats wear Armani suits to their sumptuous weddings. Let the families in Britain with sons in Iraq and Afghanistan feel even more isolated from their traditional culture by seeing the physical embodiment of their ancient government treat the sacrifice of their loved ones with shame and disgrace.

War is an ugly business but it is a national business. Military service has bound the royal family to the people as a whole from time immemorial. The prince looks great in a scarlet tunic and when I see such a winsome and beautiful couple, resplendent in such raiment I wish we had a king.

I intend to wear my own CPO chocker whites and full medals to my own son’s wedding, not to glorify war but like many working men it is the nicest suit of clothes I own. Also it reminds our friends and neighbors why the swastika does not fly over Pennsylvania Avenue and why A-Queda will never sponsor a float in our founders day parade.

@SteveM: "War is ugly and ignoble" -- then you would have, what -- *charmed* Hitler into thinking about maybe shutting down Treblinka?

"War should not be commingled with anything connected to God."

That would be news to the Lord of Hosts.

A fine choice by HRH--adorned by his pilot's wings, his Garter star and sash and his Jubilee medal.
