The Commitment

From the wedding sermon

I pray that all of us present and the many millions watching this ceremony and sharing in your joy today, will do everything in our power to support and uphold you in your new life. And I pray that God will bless you in the way of life that you have chosen, that way which is expressed in the prayer that you have composed together in preparation for this day:

God our Father, we thank you for our families; for the love that we share and for the joy of our marriage.

In the busyness of each day keep our eyes fixed on what is real and important in life and help us to be generous with our time and love and energy.

Strengthened by our union help us to serve and comfort those who suffer. We ask this in the Spirit of Jesus Christ. Amen.

I always pray people are listening to that point in particular at a wedding, when it is made. We all need to be a people supportive of marriage. And in much more than political ways.

Other aspects of the sermon reminded me/echoed my interview with Fr. Jonathan Morris this week, on his new book, God Wants You Happy: From Self-Help to God’s Help.

Is this a double wedding? I do believe that's Sir Elton left of center (at the bottom) in the picture with his own....um...friend.

Something tells me that 99% of the *other* homilies delivered in the C of E these days are nowhere near this pleasant.

Credit where credit is due: at least he mentioned Jesus!

I was struck by the wise decision to place the two modest, middle-aged nuns next to the Royal Couple -- an apt reminder of the simpleness of life of which they are the exceptions. Likewise, the sole reading of Romans12:1-17 was a very interesting choice, being as it was Paul's exhortation to live a life that is not defined by the outside world, but by one's faith in Christ and to act in accordance with it. A fascinatingly faith-based wedding in a generally faithless society.

Will there be a Chicken Dance? Can it truly be called a wedding without a Chicken Dance?

The Royals, over the last several decades, have NOT had a good record on marriage longevity. A little Chicken Dancing or at least some "Baby's Got Back", may just what the marriage doctor ordered.

I can hear the DJ now:

"Uh oh, is that grandma making her way to the dance floor?"

(enter the piercing sound of "Electric Slide"....here)

The shame of it is that the ABC is in favor of SSM.
