President Details Efforts to Kill Bin Laden

In a statement from the East Room of the White House, President Obama confirmed that Osama Bin Laden was killed in a U.S.-led operation today.

The president said he was briefed last August on a possible lead to Bin Laden, but that it took “many months to run this thread to ground.”

Finally, intelligence tracked Bin Laden to a compound “deep inside Pakistan,” in Abad Abad. Last week, the president determined that there was “enough intelligence to take action, and authorized action” earlier today. A small team of Americans carried out the operation, and after a firefight, killed Bin Laden and took his body into custody. No Americans were harmed.

Obama credited the Pakistani intelligence services for helping to lead the U.S. to Bin Laden.
