Sen. Tom Coburn (R., Okla.), a member of the “Gang of Six” senators working on a budget deal, has come under fire in recent weeks from anti-tax activist Grover Norquist.
Norquist has called on Coburn to drop out of the group and criticized the longtime fiscal hawk for supporting the elimination of various tax credits.
“[Democrats] are playing Coburn like a Stradivarius,” Norquist warned in an interview last month with National Review Online. “He should walk away as soon as possible.”
Coburn tells NRO that he will not be bullied by Norquist. He also pulls no punches in guessing why Norquist continues to hammer him. “He is making a lot of money off of this,” he says.
“I actually don’t read what he says anymore,” Coburn says. “It’s predictable; it’s over the top.”
