Andy, the image of OBL in a firefight with Navy SEALs would obviously be one his supporters would relish. But the fact that bin Laden was apparently unarmed and un-human-shielded at the time he was dispatched certainly seems to suggest that the SEALs were there to kill him, not capture him. Nobody has seen the wording of the president’s authorization for the op, but we’ve heard reports that the team was instructed not to take any gambles with their own safety. We’ve also heard reports that OBL was given an exceedingly brief opportunity to surrender. Both of those nuggets are consistent with a shoot-first, ask questions later approach.
