Rising Gas Prices Good for the American Economy, and Politics

by Samuel R. Staley

On Reason’s Out of Control Policy blog, I make the point that $4 a gallon gasoline is good for the economy and American politics. Higher oil and gas prices are triggering real changes in consumer behavior which may finally get us out from under the implicitly pro-government mantra, perpetuated by Republicans and Democrats, that Americans are “addicted” to oil (and cars). We aren’t. We’re just making rational choices based on the information we have. Just ask Michael Jackson, CEO of Autonation.
