In case you’ve missed it, Texas has seen about 3,400 square miles of land — an area about the size of Puerto Rico — destroyed by wildfires. Pres. Barack Obama hit Texas to do some political fund-raising and give some speeches about immigration; Gov. Rick Perry suggested that he take a gubernatorially guided tour of some of the damage. The president couldn’t be bothered, but asked the governor to come to El Paso to act as a prop at a political event. Governor Perry declined.
Governor Perry often complains that the federal government simultaneously fails to do its real work and involves itself in things that are not real national priorities. The last time the president visited Texas, Governor Perry greeted him with a letter in hand demanding that the federal government execute its border-security duties. (It still won’t.) The governor is asking for a federal emergency declaration that will make additional firefighting resources available. The Obama administration is not budging. Never mind that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has seen fit to declare a snowstorm — in Connecticut, in the winter — a federal disaster this year, along with “severe winter storms” in Oklahoma and Missouri.
Democrats act as though Governor Perry is being hypocritical, because he has called for less federal interference in many state affairs. But, to my knowledge, Governor Perry has not called for the dissolution of the federal government (or of FEMA), and I am certain that Texans continue to pay taxes for the maintenance of it, serve in the military defending it, etc. When federal, state, and local authorities blew it during Hurricane Katrina, Texas found homes for a great number of those evacuees — the philosophy at work is federalism, not Social Darwinism.
I am fairly confident that if 3,400 square miles of Northern Virginia or New Jersey went up in flames, a federal emergency would be proclaimed. I am 100 percent confident that if the font size is one point off on your federally mandated Hmong-language minimum-wage poster, you can be sure that the Department of Labor will be airlifting a team of federal busybodies to be on your case most pronto; if you’re on fire, you get a nice speech.
In Texas, President Obama has more important things to do, such as raising money and pandering to Hispanic voters by dangling the promise of “comprehensive” immigration reform before them, knowing that it’s a go-nowhere proposition. He’ll visit a city on a border that his government controls about as well as President Zardari controls his, and which is at times about as dangerous.
To its credit, the Obama administration has dispatched aircraft to help with the firefighting . . . in Mexico.
Heckuva job, etc.
Does the hmong language really have no words for "department" and "labor" (not to mention "the" and "of")?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseObama said this today: "So, we have gone above and beyond what was requested by the very Republicans who said they supported broader reform as long as we got serious about enforcement. But even though we’ve answered these concerns, I suspect there will be those who will try to move the goal posts one more time. They’ll say we need to triple the border patrol. Or quadruple the border patrol. They’ll say we need a higher fence to support reform.
Maybe they’ll say we need a moat. Or alligators in the moat.
They’ll never be satisfied."
It's comforting to know that in a parallel universe, Obama is using the very same logic against himself and his party, and at least those people aren't being screwed.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI really like Gov Perry. I'd like to hear more about him as POTUS prospect.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThis is one of the fundamental flaws with a centralized government. We send our money to the folks in DC, and they give us some of it back if and only if we behave in a manner they find acceptable.
In this case the foolish people of Texas had the unmitigated gall to elect an outspoken Republican. Therefore the Federal government's politicians will withhold the money that the Texas taxpayers sent to DC.
The politicians decide how our money is spent and that means that their priorites supercede those of the people. Things are decided based on a calculus that looks at what is best for the politician not what is best for the taxpayers.
This situation is the best example we have lately of how socialism ultimately fails us. Our money will never be spent more wisely by others. It is always better to let us keep it and use it as we see fit.

Once again, I am so glad I dodged the draft. But I do pay taxes: as little as possible, just like anyone else.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseAfterthought: If so much of Texas went up in flames, then why not give it back to the Native Americans from whom it was taken? I am sure they will accept it, charcoal and all, without further federal or state funding. That is, provided that the restored territory is not taxed.

No. Just hints at secession.
Anyone want to chime in about FEMA being an Article I Section 8 thing?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWell - it seems he might as well. Is there value in paying taxes to support services that the President is deliberately withholding? So why not get rid of all of it. Make disaster relief a state only duty. Then we can cut that amount for a start on the trillions. Then Texas can ask its own citizens for financial help through their own tax system. Probably cost them less too through by-passing the federal trough first.

Nobody here is that stupid.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWatch out- Obama is looking for votes gang...
My wife and I are always poking fun at each other for our uncanny ability to read the plot of one of our favorite television shows, "Criminal Minds." But frankly, Obama and the Demwits are far easier to read than that! I wish there was a way I could bet money on the track for their next move.
Obama can't possibly be "distracted" by some fires in Texas. Come now...
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThis episode of the "Obama Show" shows just how much he despises Texas. Unfortunately, Perry's behavior on the budget problems here is nothing short of shameful - denial followed by hanging the deficit on the backs of the state's woeful education system while letting the growth of the administrative branch in Texas' government to continue its explosive growth. Secession would be a tremendous boost to both Texas and the United States - oil production would resume in a matter of minutes. However, is there any way we can send our governor out of the state first?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI was trying to find your email address on the Corner the other day to write you about this very thing.
As a Texan, I'm outraged that the Obama administration is up to its old tricks of "punishing" those who, like Gov. Rick Perry, don't go along with what they want.
How dare they hold back disaster funds from Texans hit so hard by those sweeping fires!
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI heard his speech in TX and had to pinch myself near the end when I fully expected Rod Serling to come walking out and welcome us all into The Twilight Zone. Once assured that wasn't the case, several items came to mind:
- Considering the state of things right now in America I find it very instructive that Obama's #1 priority seems to be appeasing pro-illegal types. Not that three letter word J-O-B-S. Not keeping unemployment at or below 8%. Not creating or saving jobs. Not reducing gas prices. Not dealing with Pakistan following the raid. Nope. Illegals are priority #1. I'm sure it's because his poll numbers aren't looking too great and he wants their votes for next year.
- By propping up this bizarre charade of illegals crossing the border doesn't this place Democrats in unfortunate role of being the modern day incarnation of the plantation owner...only today the families in the fields are working under the table in risky conditions and most often they are of Hispanic and Asian origin rather than African or Caribbean. This shouldn't be too surprising though given the Democratic track record of issuing promises to people of color and then never living up to them.
- By any estimation the Mexican government is corrupt and it supports a social system in that country that is destructive of the Mexican people. As long as our border is porous and Mexico can filter her citizens into ours, isn't the horrid Mexican system thus perpetuated? In effect, isn't our open border giving Mexico an excuse to continue an unsatisfactory status quo? If we sealed our southern border and adopted laws similar to those Mexico uses to control her southern border, would we not then create some momentum for Mexico's government to reform and make more opportunities in Mexico for Mexican citizens?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWe're just missing the link between the two issues Mr. Williamson discusses. See, the wildfires are supposed to serve as a substitute for a fence. Illegals won't come across a burning border. Of course, the fires are in the wrong place. But hey, close enough for government work!
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuse@Eric: Maybe that's what the WH Press Sec'y meant yesterday when he claimed a border fence had been built? (And all this time we thought a border fence represented some of those "shovel ready" jobs). How many days until Obama takes a job teaching at some liberal arts college?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbusePresident Obama knows that he is presiding over the worst economy since the Great Depression. His plan to get re-elected is to generate very high turnout from a political coalition of blacks, hispanics, and white leftists. He is probably correct that blacks will vote for him in overwhelming numbers despite suffering terrible economic loss during the Obama presidency. His only hope for hispanics voting in a similar way is to get them to identify themselves primarily as an agrieved racial group.
The GOP should be able to parry this attack by talking about how a very poor economy hurts people on the lower end of the economic ladder especially hard. They need to be hard hitting and specifically accuse President Obama of race-baiting. One strategy would be for the GOP to re-play Democrat ads that are broadcast on black and hispanic radio stations that make overt racial appeals. The GOP needs to have the whole country hear what the Democrats intend to only have black and/or hispanic audiences hear.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI'm just curious if the Dept of Justice folks counter sue the Dept of Labor on the posters. I mean the font challenged has to be a minority party in need of an advocate don't they?
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuse@cdscott1968: You're on point. Something to consider (and that I haven't seen any discussion of), is that for Obama to win in 2012 he need not sweep the entire country. He simply needs to win key states with the right numbers for the electoral college. Indeed, there are entire regions of the country he may bypass while favoring those areas he believes he can squeeze votes out of. Such a divisive tactic isn't healthy for our form of government. Nor is the strong possibility that his campaign will employ questionable practices - just like they did in 2008 - in generating money and votes. Democrats rarely win at the ballot box fair and square so we shouldn't expect it of them in 2012. There will be funny business afoot. It will not be anything close to a clean election cycle.

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseBarack Obama is President of the United States because he's a master of illusion. Thus, he gives an immigration reform speech along a border he has no intention of securing, giving the illusion he plans to deal seriously with illegal immigration when, in fact, he's simply pandering to Hispanics for votes.
For those who are suffering from the consequences of illegal immigration, President Obama will promise to secure the borders and get tough on enforcement, although he will have no specific plan to do so. And for those who want legal status for their family and friends, he will get that done while the rest of us wait for secure borders and tougher enforcement.
