Your Government at Work

Text

Or rather, your “government” at “work.” The House just held a “show vote” on raising the debt ceiling, but that’s nothing compared to the Democratic Senate. Behold this riveting footage of Senate Democrats hammering out the final details of a long-awaited budget resolution phoning in another day on the “job.”

Background: The Senate was supposed to be on recess all week for Memorial Day, but Sen. Jeff Sessions (R., Ala.), ranking member on the Senate Budget committee, wanted to force Democrats to take a roll-call vote on a motion to adjourn for the vacation. He did so out of protest against the Democratic Senate’s failure to pass a budget in nearly 800 days. This would have been quite embarrassing for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) and his colleagues, so Reid decided not to fully adjourn the Senate and hold a number of “pro forma” sessions during the week so they could still have their vacation, but it just wouldn’t count as one. As such, we get scenes like the one posted above. Remember, you’re looking at “the greatest deliberative body in the world.”
