Rick Santorum Makes It Official

Text

This election is about maintaining freedom, Rick Santorum said in the announcement of his presidential campaign this morning in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. It was to Carpenter’s Park that his grandfather came from Italy for the sake of the freedom of his children, and it was there the Santorums returned today. The former Pennsylvania senator said that Americans are looking for a “A leader who is optimistic and believes that we meet those challenges.

Belief in the American people, not the government, is a theme Santorum repeatedly brings up on the campaign trail. “President Obama . . . believes America’s greatness is in government, not its people,” he said today. Repealing Obamacare is a priority, he says, because it is creates “dependency”: “Every single American will be hooked to the government with an IV.”

“It is our watch. It is our time” to preserve what the Founders established.

On Good Morning America this morning, Santorum said, as made clear to me in recent days, that he is “in it to win.”

When I asked him late last week how a win is plausible, he pointed to the encouragement he is getting on the ground not just in Iowa but in New Hampshire and South Carolina. He also offers as evidence: “I’ve run against three Democratic incumbents and I’m three for three.”

“I’m ready to lead. I’m ready to do what has to be done for the next generation. With the courage to fight for freedom. With the courage to fight for America,” Santorum said in his D-Day anniversary announcement.
