Two Quick Weiner Points

by Jay Nordlinger

Bite-sized Weiners, you might call them (or not). I don’t think I’ve ever seen this in a lifetime (or something like that) of reading about and covering politics: “Weiner spokeswoman Risa Heller said in a one-sentence statement Friday night, ‘According to Congressman Weiner, his communications with this person were neither explicit nor indecent.’” (I am quoting an Associated Press report, here.)

“According to Congressman Weiner,” says his spokesperson. She is being very careful, isn’t she? And rightly so.

Okay, a headline: “Top Democratic women dodge tough call on Weiner.” (Article here.) Yeah, it’s a toughie. Would it be a toughie if the congressman in question were a conservative Republican?

UPDATE: As Andrew Stiles notes above, the period of dodging the “tough call” seems to have passed. If Nancy Pelosi, that San Francisco treat, says the guy’s gotta go — isn’t it safe for everyone, to make the same call? From what I know, however, Rangel’s still with him. (Said “Chollie,” “He wasn’t going with prostitutes. He wasn’t going out with little boys. He wasn’t going into men’s rooms with broad stances.”) (That was “wide,” as I recall.)

The Corner

The one and only.
