Sen. Marco Rubio has waited five months to deliver his maiden speech. Today, finally, the Florida freshman will take to the floor.
According to excerpts obtained by National Review Online, Rubio will call for a “new American century.”
Rubio’s key theme is American exceptionalism. “Ronald Reagan described America as a shining city on a hill,” he will say. “America never wanted to be the only shining city. We wanted our example to inspire the people of the world to build one of their own. You see, these nations, these new shining cities, they can join us, but they can never replace us. Because the light coming from them is but a reflection of our own.
“The light of an American century that now spreads throughout the earth,” he continues. “The world still needs America. The world still needs our light. It needs another American century.”
Reflecting on the history of the United States, Rubio will note that though America did not seek to be a world power, “that is exactly what the American economic miracle made her.”
“Most great powers have used their strength to conquer other nations,” he will says. “But America is different. For us, power also came with a sense that to those that much is given, much is expected. A sense that with the blessings God bestowed upon our land, came the responsibility to make the world a better place. In the 20th century, that is exactly what America did.”
Turning from the past to the future, Rubio will outline his political agenda. “Now we find ourselves in a new century. And there is a growing sense that for America, things will never be the same,” he will say. “That maybe, this new century will belong to someone else. Indeed, we do stand now at a turning point in our history. One where there are only two ways forward for us. We will either bring on another American century, or we are doomed to witness America’s decline.”
“A new American century is within our reach,” he will declare. “There is nothing wrong with our people. Americans haven’t forgotten how to start a business. They haven’t run out of good ideas. Americans are as great as we have ever been. But our government is broken. And a broken government is keeping us from doing what we have done better than anyone in the world for over a century: Create jobs.
“If we here in Washington could just find agreement on a plan to start getting our debt under control. If we could just make our tax code simpler and more predictable. And if we could just get the government to ease up on some of these onerous regulations, the American people will take care of the rest,” he will argue. “If this government will do its part, this generation of Americans is ready to theirs. They will give us a prosperous, upwardly mobile economy. One where our children will invent, build and sell things to a world where more people than ever before can afford to buy them.”
“If we can give America a government that lives within its means, the American economy will give us a government whose means are considerable,” he will say. “A government that can afford to pay for the things a government should do, because it does not waste money on things it should not do. If we can deliver on a few simple but important things, we have the chance to achieve something that is hard to imagine is even possible. An America whose future will be greater than its past.”
The speech will be broadcast at 2:45 p.m. on CSPAN-2.
Marco Rubio has such potential! He's an exciting political figure, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for him.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThere are 307 million of us, 1.3 billion Chinese and 1 billion Indians. As long as those two weren't moderizing, we were unchallengeable because we've long been the largest developed country. By 2050, that probably won't be the case.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseCSpan once featured a liberal writer who defended the idea of American exceptionalism in a way similar to the way Rubio does: we want others to follow our good values.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseEven Chris Matthews once defended his overall belief that it's better to be a Catholic: he said that if he didn't believe that, he wouldn't be a Catholic. If one believes in one's values and they are also different than those of someone else, there is an implied and proper belief that others should adopt the values you already have.
I'm a fan of Rubio, but I'm afraid to report that this excerpt worries me a little. I don't think what Americans are looking for right now is someone who is going to launch new overseas ventures or try to save the world.
We need to retrench, in all senses of the word. That doesn't mean the same as retreat or shrink or surrender.
But it means going back to basics, focusing on keeping America great by restoring our domestic economy by slashing government spending, regulation and taxes, by developing energy resources, and by improving border security. It also means strengthening our military and reversing Obama's anti-missile defense policy. And it means shaking up our moribund educational system.
It is only because America has been strong domestically that it ever has the ability or authority to demonstrate strength internationally. We are hollowing out our core -- our core economy, our core resources, our core values. We need to restore all of the above before we can serve as an example to others once again.
If that is what Rubio means, then I stand corrected.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseIn order to make America once again,
we need to get rid of ALL of the
interest groups in Washington, D.C.,
and return prayer to the classroom,
and eliminate Political Correctness
from the American community.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThis speech is nothing more than wishful thinking. He is telling us what we want to hear, but, he has no clue on how to make the 21st.Century another American Century without a society of more and more. Rubio's vision of America is not a new vision for the future. Instead, it is a statement of nostalgia because everyone knows the Republican/Tea Party has no workable plan for the future of our country. The Administration on the other hand has proposed a Budget Plan with cuts in spending to deal with the Debt problem. We also have an Energy Independent Plan from foreign oil. The Administration has fixed the liquidity problem with the banking system created by the Republicans model of "pull yourself by the boot straps" mentality and small government. Internationally, The Administration killed Osama and is bringing our troops back home. We also supported political change in the Middle East to bring down tyrants. It seems to me that Mr Rubio's vision for America is a little bit too late because the Democratic Obama Administration is well on their way to making Mr. Rubio's Speech into a reality...
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseSheesh there are some stupid comments. Especially True2.
Rubio is inspiring and aspiring. He is showing us what we can be, what we must be.
What is the difference between successful rich countries and poor countries? Why is the U.S rich and Mexico poor? Government. That's it. Nothing more. Government. Bad government impoverishes nations, Good government enriches nations. We are getting poorer...because we have bad government. The good news is because we are a democracy we can change that. We just have to decide to do so.
Over and over again we've seen less government influence = more prosperity.
The government meddles in every aspect of our life, our economy, our culture. It seeks to be the center of all things. This diminishes us as a nation.
There is nothing special or magical about the Chinese or Indians. They have many more problems that we do. We are ceding our leadership, ceding the future to these guys. And by doing so the future will be dimmer for all of humanity.
