A not-so-awesome e-mail to end the day with:
From: Amy Poehler for Planned Parenthood

Subject: So great

Dear kathryn,
You know who is awesome? Cecile Richards. She’s the president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. She’s smart, she’s tough, and she’s totally dedicated to fighting for women’s health. And you know who else totally rules? Every single doctor and nurse and receptionist and volunteer who shows up at a Planned Parenthood health center to make sure that every person who walks through their door gets the care they need.
And when it comes to Planned Parenthood, there’s one more group of people who are really, truly, no-kidding awesome: the members who give money and time to make it all possible. I should know. I’m one of them.
You should be, too. In fact, you should stop reading this email right now and click here to become a Planned Parenthood Federation of America member like me this very second. Helping Planned Parenthood help women is always a good thing, but right now it’s even better because some very generous people will match your membership bucks (but only until June 30, so do it now).
You get these emails, you pay attention — you already know how important Planned Parenthood is. But now is an important time to give and become a member. Give a dollar right now, and it magically turns into two. Give $50, and that’s a hundred dollars for Planned Parenthood. There’s no better way to have an impact for women’s health than being a Planned Parenthood member — and if you give now, you have twice the impact.
Admit it, that’s pretty convincing. You know it’s time to reach for that credit card and make your donation. But if you’re still not sold, think back to the first time you went to a Planned Parenthood health center, scared or broke or confused or hopeful. Think about your friends, or your sister, or your daughter, son, niece, or nephew. Think about every person out there who has nowhere else to go, nobody else to count on, nobody but Planned Parenthood.
It’s up to us to make sure Planned Parenthood is strong enough to protect their rights and their health. Especially because we are having a moment right now when people are trying to come up with new ways to make the lives of all the folks who rely on Planned Parenthood pretty difficult. What makes it possible for Planned Parenthood to make a real, irreplaceable difference for those folks are members like me — and hopefully you.
So why are you still reading? You should be click-click-clicking right here to become a member!
Thanks for reading this, thanks for joining or renewing, thanks for sticking with the incredible people at this incredible organization, and thanks for joining me in saying that Planned Parenthood is awesome!
Sincerely,
Amy Poehler
Amy really needs to meet Abby’s book.
Ok, I freely admit I was about to make a snarky comment about what it says for a political ideology to lean so heavily on affirmation from Saturday Night Live comics.
Then, I remembered Dennis Miller, Jim Brewer, and Victoria Jackson. :)
Oh well ...
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseYeah, and Robby Mook told me yesterday my DCCC membership was up for renewal. I'll send him an appropriately snarky reply when dccc.org stops sending me hilarious fund raising junk mail, composed to appear to be personal letters from DemoHack luminaries, because I somehow got on their list last November. Not until they stop, Robby.

"Because the Only Good Progressive is a Failed Progressive"
"Think about every person out there who has nowhere else to go, nobody else to count on, nobody but Planned Parenthood."
Man, that's depressing as hell, nobody else to count on but an abortion mill like Planned Parenthood?
Do the best medical school students go work at Planned Parenthood clinics? I can't see it...I see the sleazy ambulance chaser eqivalant type of doctor working at this places.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWhat puts this in perspective for me are comments like those of LinUSA who say that a woman who is raped must take the blastula or embryo to term out of respect for the "child." Jesus clearly would have wanted a woman subjected to violence to carry the embryo to term, right?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseYes, He would have. I challenge you to find anything in the New Testament that suggests that Jesus supported abortion in any circumstances--or, conversely, to suggest that He would have been indifferent to the woman's sufferings. But I think He would have had hard words for anyone who mocked an unborn child as a mere "blastula".
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseMs. Poehler isn't awesome or smart if she believes Planned Parenthood's mission and primary purpose is to provide healthcare services for women. If the claims in her e-mail were true, the name of the organization would be Women's Healthcare Services, not Planned Parenthood, as in planning when not to have children.
Ms. Poehler should stop by a local Planned Parenthood clinic sometime - not one of the show clinics reserved for contributors and special guests - and see the Planned Parenthood most women see, the Planned Parenthood Abby Johnson worked for and wrote about. Of course, ignorance is bliss and that's what Planned Parenthood counts on when trolling for supporters like Amy Poehler.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseAmy: shut up and make jokes.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseOh my...
"women’s health" is the new definition of the word 'is' - hidden code for abortion?
This is the same overtly hyped average comedian who played Hillary Clinton straight, trying so hard to minimize all the negatives of Mrs. Rodham Clinton on SNL. It was a truly absurd partisan con job, one which offered the most debasing for the likes of Mrs. Palin and others on the Republican side at the same time.
Amy Poehler is not without some talent, but we all know she is on tv and promoted because of the partisan community of dedicated Democrats slanting all they can via various Media endeavors.
It is insulting to all, and reveals more of the tunnel Democratic Partisans live sheltered within. They are lost in growing political offerings primarily for a sense of belonging, thinking all share this misguided view - but then they are stunned to find they are actually the few. The turn to vilify is often replaced with any serious effort to construct a valid explanation for their flimsy political embrace. It is a fashion which we have watched grow similarly on the sound side unfortunately. All the more reason to be careful about these weak Image - Identity games.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThere's also the oblique reference to women's "rights." Rights to what? Hm....What could Amy possibly mean here?
The good news is if they must resort to this deception, abortion must be losing popularity among the plain folk.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWhat's the problem here? I was expecting some Democratic fundraising appeal or a call to arms to protest against cuts. But all she's doing is asking for donations to PP. It is a legal organization providing legal services. We should applaud them when they rely on private donations rather than taxpayer money. Let them survive independent of the government. As a conservative with libertarian leanings, I see nothing that warrants criticism.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI enjoy reading Kathryn's e-mail in-box. That is the gift that keeps on giving year 'round. Just like jelly of the month club.
Nice Kathryn, you made my evening. I remember why I do not watch "Park and Rec" and stopped watching "House", too.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseOh man, that stinks, and I love Parks and Rec. :( Sad...sad...frowny face. Why, WHY do actors inject their politics into everything. Just shut up and entertain me. You can't entertain me if I find you disgusting in real life.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseShe just says what she's told to say and she's happy to do it.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseHerman Cain recently said:
"Planned Parenthood? It should be called Planned Genocide. And you can quote me on that."
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseHow does K Lo make these email lists? She does not seem like their target demographic.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseSingle woman over forty? I think they pretty much presume in that case you're a member of Club Now.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseIs it true there is going to be a House 2, and Bill Maher auditioned for the role of House?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWhat's next? Neil Patrick Harris emailing you for bridesmaid duties?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThat e-mail reads like it was written by a Valley girl. Nobody will ever accuse Amy Poehler of being erudite.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI'm pretty sure she was "in character" in that email.
