Where does the debate go from here? For those of us who believe marriage is and should remain the union of a husband and wife, the key battleground states are New Hampshire, Iowa, North Carolina, Minnesota, West Virginia, Indiana and possibly Pennsylvania. In New Hampshire, the legislature will vote on whether to repeal a gay-marriage bill passed by Democrats. In Iowa, the fight is whether the Democrats who control the Senate will permit the people of Iowa to vote on gay marriage.
We did not decide to pick a fight about gay marriage in the first two presidential primary states in the nation; the fight was chosen by the other side. This issue is not going away, and Republicans in the real world have to face that fact.
