Re: Another Cabinet Department to Abolish

Mark, re the President’s brilliant idea to create a “Department of Jobs” to stimulate the economy, perhaps with “Job Security Administration” agents who could grope around in your underwear when you line up to apply for an opening at Burger King in case the unemployment rate drops so low it suddenly falls into your gusset:

As usual (as Paul Krugman will tell you) Obama isn’t going far enough. The nation is crying out for a Department of Departments to coordinate coordination between departments.

Obviously, this would not include Agencies and Bureaux, which would require a separate Bureau Czar and Agency Tsar that would maintain Jamie Gorelick’s “wall of separation” between them and the Secretary of Departmental Departments.

Madam with all due respect that must be referred to the appropriate committee to study the ramifications of the redundant departments and their disparate impact on the women, children, medicare beneficiaries, veterans, lobbyists, congressional spouses and sundry committees to study the abolition of superfluous legislation.

Surely there will be a unit dedicated to "saving" jobs, while another is dedicated to "creating" them...

You know, isn't the very existence of the GAO a tacit admission that the government has no self-interest in combating fraud, abuse, waste, and bloat. So they tried to legislate accountability into government and created the GAO. Rhetorical question: has any GAO report ever resulted in any action to correct the problem?

Good God video captcha's are about to push me away from reading NRO. Hey NRO staff, there are hundreds of competing blogs out there who don't make you watch adds from Government Motors just to be able to post!

In related news, I am sure that some colleges have already established departments of Studies Studies, to provide an overview of all those other Studies departments. In a few years, we will see our first Ph.D.s in Studies Studies (lots of them), soon followed by specialized Ph.D.s in the History of Studies Studies.

While Steyn's suggestions are entirely worthy, I believe them a bit hasty without a National Commission of some sort to develop a framework going forward. I suggest this commission study the matter and publish its findings in... oh... December 2012.

"....to develop a framework going forward."

I think you mean to develop a trajectory toward a consensus about a framework for an action plan that leads to a path forward.

If there's one thing I hate about government-speak, it's the darn "path forward." They all say it, and with such sincerity.

You said it, brother. NOTHING grates on me more than "going forward".

Oh! You're joking.

OH MY GOD! Please tell me you're joking.

Maybe we shouldn't be giving him any ideas.

Create enough new cabinets, departments, and administrations, and the staffing requirements alone will be adequate to reduce the level of unemployment.

Will there be five subdepartments?

Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon?

When I was a student at Miami University I worked as student help in the Dean of Arts and Sciences. She was responsible for the work of one of the most coveted committees on campus, the Committee on Committees.

There needs to be a study of the outcome of a Jobs Department first, with many committees and heads to butt in think tanks. Prior to the study of the Jobs, the fictitious mirage on the horizon, there will need to be funding discussions for the study and graphs with color pie charts to be made into Power Point slides and Excel spread sheets. Prior to funding discussions, there will need to be studies of funding with more charts and graphs. Prior to studies of funding committee there would need to be a budget committee to study the funding with an abacus for an actual budget for the committee, which could lead to subcommittees to study which part of the national budget the funding will be cut to form the committee. This will then be tagged to the Super Committee and it will stall in Congress with Conyers stating it is racist, and demanding a committee to study the racist intent of the jobs committee and lack of funding and sharing of sacrifice. Unfortunately there are no actual dollars for the funding, but that never stopped The Won and his Democrat gang before, did it?
