The Speaker of the House responds to Joe Biden’s apparent empathy for China’s one-child policy: “I’m deeply troubled by the comments reportedly made by the Vice President yesterday regarding China’s reprehensible one-child policy, which has resulted in forced sterilizations and coerced abortions and should not be condoned by any American official. No government on Earth has the authority to place quotas on the value of innocent human life, or to treat life as an economic commodity that can be regulated and taken away on a whim by the state. I hope and trust that the Vice President didn’t actually say what has been reported, and that a correction or clarification from the White House will be forthcoming. The Obama administration should be focusing on jobs for the American people, not encouraging foreign governments to utilize abortion as a means of population and deficit control.”
Interesting.
In the same speech, Biden also gave a shout out to the "illustrious" general Zhu De (founder of the Chinese Red Army, and architect of Communist victory over the Kuomintang):

Biden also mentioned that the Peace Corps is operating in China. Who knew? I guess China's one of those developing nations that needs our assistance.
I'm sure there's a perfectly innocent explanation -- like, you know, they're just there to keep an eye on the Communists.
John F. Kennedy's head would spin, if he could see what passes for Democrats these days.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI realize the scope and breadth of the possible choices is enormous, but I'm thinking that this was indeed the dumbest thing Joe Biden has said, ever.
In fact, when speaking about a policy as detestable and inhuman as this one, this statement is perhaps the dumbest thing ever said by a US official, in this administration or any other.
China's "one child" policy stands in diametric opposition to every principle of human rights that this country has enunciated for more than 100-years, and yet Biden's OK with it? Unbelievable.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThe only thing that Biden regrets about saying that is that he doesn't know how to say it in Chinese.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseDoes Joe Biden believe the current lack of females in China is a good thing? That is a direct result of the one child policy.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI had the sound muted when the TV news showed Biden speaking in China the other day, and I thought, "What incredible mediocrities we have in high national office right now."
Disgusting.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseJoe Biden, the good Christian.
In the immortal words of Bugs Bunny: "What a moroon!"
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseAside from the morality of the policy, it will produce a demographic disaster for China by the end of this century, if not before. This is probably the most serious block to any Chinese ambitions for world status. They will not implode as Russia will but they will be crippled.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseOr the looming demographic catastrophe will cause them to have to either traffic women (and its debtors to look the other way) or to take military action (invading neighboring states) to rectify the problem.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseGood for the Speaker. He should keep on talking until the Vice President does some explaining. Hopefully some prominent Catholic Bishops will speak up too.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseNot just dumb ... evil.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseChina already faces the ramifications of too many men, not enough women. Even worse is the demographic bomb China faces in regard to funding retirement with too few younger workers.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseBut, what can you expect from the gaffe machine that is Biden, ...after all if you agree that the Tea Party are acting like terrorists..then why not support a one child policy. Even better, lets ask Al Gore to repeat his radical green request that women sterilize themselves for the good of the planet.
I can't imagine the White House getting involved. The subject is, after all, above POTUS pay grade.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseClearly, to Joe Biden, government-sponsored abortion, child murder, and euthanasia, not to mention specifically targeting women-of-the-future for elimination, is NOT a "big f'ing deal."
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseQuote: "No government on Earth has the authority to place quotas on the value of innocent human life, or to treat life as an economic commodity that can be regulated and taken away on a whim by the state."
Agreed! I look forward to Boehner sponsoring a bill that permanently abolishes Selective Service (the draft). By "at whim" I of course refer to escapades such as Vietnam, or any other non-war that our fearless leaders choose to muck about in, for economic reasons of course.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseAnd they say Ms. Ricci is the dim one from Delaware...
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseFirst, Obama made me miss Clinton. Now, Biden is making me miss Gore.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseCombine political correctness run amok and the unthinking gaffe-machine that is Joe Biden and this is what you get.
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuse[sarcasm]It's better that the Chinese have only one child than the child suffer the shame of having to have a subsidized luch at school[/sarcasm]
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbusePeople always say that leftists look upon our hard earned money as belonging to the government. They get to tell us how much of it we can keep. It's theirs.
Well, that's actually how they view human life. They can determine who can live and who can die. They can arbitrate life right down to who gets to exist, because they are so much more enlightened than everyone else.
Your existence is at the mercy of the government. While you're here, you'll work to support the government, and the government will let you keep some of it. Then you'll die, and the government will take 1/2 of all you have left.
But you cannot complain. The government let you live in the first place.
Nice to know that the imbecile who finished dead last in his law school class who's a heartbeat away from being the most powerful man in the country is a committed adherent to eugenics.
Joe "Sanger" Biden. Dumber than dog spit.
Sorry, dogs.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbusePhilosophically, I agree that the one child policy is reprehensible, despite its lax enforcement in many cases (China's birth rate is actually about 1.6, nowhere near the lowest in Asia.)
On the other hand, I do find myself wondering what, pragmatically (and the Chinese are nothing if not pragmatic,) I would do as a leader if 80% of the children born were effectively on welfare from birth. This isn't such an inaccurate characterization during the depths of the Mao horrors.
The reason this question is relevant, and worth considering, is the phenomenal growth and aggressive expansion effort of the US welfare state. Be my guest if you want to jump right to the question of "what will the US do when all children born have little choice but be poorly educated, in a distressed economy with no manufacturing base, burdened with overwhelming taxation IF they make some effort to be productive but otherwise living on the dole, yet people keep having children because we have a policy of abandoning every principle and spending every dollar that doesn't go in a politician's pocket where the welfare of children are concerned?"
