‘The free enterprise system has lifted more people out of poverty than all the government anti-poverty programs combined’

Marco Rubio spoke earlier tonight at the Reagan library on “the proper role of government,” emphasizing “prosperity and compassion” as priorities.

He said that “poverty does not create our social problems; our social problems create our poverty.”

The Florida senator said: Those of us raised in “Ronald Reagan’s America” are now being called to leadership, to make tough decisions about America’s future. He was plenty hard on his own party from the top. And yes, he talked entitlement reform.

But you can watch for yourself.

Blah, Blah, Blah...

What about entitlements Marco? What you gonna cut?

And OBTW, maintaining the global, aggressive "Power Projection" Empire that you think should be bumped up even more ain't free.

Typical Free War - Free Lunch talk from a inchoate Neocon Chump...

P.S. It would be interesting to see the newest Neocon Golden Boy on a stage with Ron Paul.

I'm not sure you even understand what the word "Neoconservative" means, so I'll just let it rest.

Precisely...you can tell who does and doesn't understand the word by the way they use it.

Dude, Rubio would mop the floor with Ron Paul. Ron Paul is a fad for the isolationist wing of the Republican Party. What great insight does Ron Paul have as to the greatness of our counry? Oh, and how popular do you think he would be as commander-in-chief? Good thing he retires after this term. At least his son has sense.

Entitlements haven't lifted anyone out of poverty. Though they have lifted a lot beaurocrats out of the middle class into the upper middle class and higher.

Whatcha gonna do when Ron Paul's gone, Steve? (Sounds like line from a dumb folk song.)

This was a good big-picture speech. He's not running for president, that's all he needed to do here.

Ron Paul is like Apple: As evil and stupid as the master may be; it's the total rabid lunacy of the unhinged fans that really makes you hate them.

I consider myself a small-L libertarian, but I've had run-ins with these crazies that have gotten frightening, really quickly. I've been called a "statist/Commie/neocon/etc." by the Paulestineans more than can be believed. When I try to point out how if someone like me, who is somewhat sympathetic to their agenda, finds them reprehensible then how the heck do they think it's playing with the general public, they get really obnoxious.

I can't wait until Paul finishes 4th or less in Iowa and New Hampshire so he will finally go away and take his Kool-Aid besotted herds with him.

I don't think that Ron Paul is the be all and end all. I don't agree with everything he says.

But I do agree with Dr. Paul's honesty. And he's a lot closer to the Truth than Rubio and his ilk with their gauzy "American Exceptionalism" schtick.

As a Senator, where's Rubio's real plan beyond running his mouth off and looking for foreign dragons that we can not longer afford to slay?

Also enjoy RP's candidness. I think classifying American Exceptionalism as "schtick" is ridiculous, though. Don't know how many people interpret that to mean that we're better than the rest of the world, so screw you. That's not what it means. It means no country in the history of the planet has ever matched what we have here. The United States is unique for its liberty, freedom, prosperity, etc. lasting as long as it has.

The average lifespan for a country's constitution since ours went into effect is 19 years. The world has seen more than 900 constitutions since then. Haiti and DR have been themselves responsible for 7% of that total.

Feel free to flush all this stuff down the toilet but it ain't all about setting off wars around the globe. If you and me and everyone else here fail to preserve what we have been blessed with, everything you crave in politics will go down in flames faster than Ron Paul's run for the White House.

I am proud that Rubio is my Senator (I try to forget Bill Nelson). A simple, conservative, free market message will carry the day in 2012. The time isn't now, but he is potentially excellent POTUS material down the road.

As a Constitutional conservative (with some strong libertarian undertones), the Paulistas seem too far out there to me. I agree with Paul on the vast majority of his domestic program, but his foreign policy is neo-McGovernist and likely suicidal. Paul sounds like a 1930s isolationist and loses me as soon as he starts talking about foreign affairs.

We need to spend our defense and foreign policy dollars wisely and, perhaps, re-position our forces around the world in fewer, forward locations (i.e., Guam instead of Japan and/or Korea) and get our allies to carry a greater defense burden. We can't, however, withdraw from the world like Paul and his supporters suggest.

I just got home from the Reagan Library where I was happy to be in the audience tonight. After the wonderful speech and Q&A (and no, he's STILL not running, thanks) there was a lovely dinner literally under the wings of the classic Air Force One 707 that was tasty and convivial. But the real glow was from this man who, like Reagan, knows that stating the "obvious" but basic facts of our creed clearly and cogently and repeatedly is the way to keep on reaching people to explain the "why" of what, deep down, they feel. Inspiring? Oh yes. And the cynics are entitled to all the pity we can feel for them. Bravo Marco! And it was great to see Nancy there, too.

He obviously has little idea about what Reagan actually did. Unless Rubio advocates increasing taxes and increasing government spending. Republicans may cling to him as an (seldom seen) example of Republican minority representation but he has no idea what he's talking about.

Reagan raised taxes with a supposed agreement with Tip O'Neill about cutting spending 3 to 1. Which never happened.

Reagan did raise taxes as part of deal with the Democrats, but even that increase was but a small fraction of his earlier tax cuts.

Scares ya doesn't he? Oh don't try to deny it. The ones the libs whine about the loudest are the ones that scare them the most. Otherwise why bother?

And to test your theory, you can send me all your tax money and I will determine the best way to spend it. First I will give myself a lifelong pension equal to my annual salary for 2 to 4 years of work in government, then I will give myself annual cost of living increases, then I will make you pay for health coverage or make your employer pay for it. You employer will send your job overseas where he wont have to pay for it, and you will be on unemployment for a year or two and will take a lower paying job with many other workers who just happen to be undocumented, aka illegal--I think Not.. but if you want to test your theory that increasing taxes and giving it to the irresponsible decision makers who have no discipline to balance their budget, go ahead. There are plenty of jobs overseas

This was a great evening. Senator Rubio was on target when he stated " Poverty does not create our social problems, our social problems create our poverty". It was a great evening with like minded citizens who love our country. And the food was great.
