The Perry Spin: ‘As Intense as I Saw It in 1979’

Text

Columbia, S.C. – Katon Dawson, Rick Perry’s South Carolina campaign chairman, tells National Review Online that the Texas governor is surging in the Palmetto State — even though he missed Sen. Jim DeMint’s forum.

“Right now, the enthusiasm for him on the ground is as intense as I saw it in 1979 working for Ronald Reagan,” Dawson says. “We have a groundswell of support.” On the absence, “We regret that he couldn’t be here today,” he says. “First of all, he’s governor of Texas. Second of all, he’s [running] a campaign for president. . . . We applaud his sense of duty.”
