Congrats to Marriage

Thanks, Kathryn! NOM has a new poll coming out later today. We’ll have a chance to see how big an impact David Weprin’s “I’m an Orthodox Jew and I support gay marriage” speech had on voters in the district. Nobody appears to know how many Orthodox Jews there are in the district, but we hope to have some data on that, and on how many voters said gay marriage was an issue for them.

But really when 40 Orthodox rabbis tell their people its against Torah law to vote for Weprin, that has to be big.

Democrat Ed Koch’s endorsement of Turner was a huge factor. But so was Democrat Dov Hikind’s endorsement and Democrat Sen. Ruben Diaz. Both did robocalls for NOM to voters and so did a very prominent apolitical rabbi, Zachariah Wallerstein. Huge.

YES! Huge!

Now: any plans to comply with court orders regarding campaign finance disclosure laws?

What does Orthodox Judaism have to do with the civil rights guaranteed to every citizens of the United States?

Does Gaggie Mallagher suggest that religious beliefs be cemented into American law?

Why no mention of Wallerstein's animus toward gays and lesbians? He blamed the recent earthquake on us! Apolitical, indeed. These are the types of crazies NOM is running with these days.

But, Maggie, whose religious beliefs will be enshrined into law--your Catholicism or Orthodox Judaism? If Orthodox Judaism wins, are you prepared to shave your head and live the life of a second class citizen whose only function is to make babies? Are you prepared to give up eating pork, meat with dairy, and clothing made from mixed fibers? Or are you telling us that the Orthodox Jews will willingly accept Jesus as their savior and mass convert? Inquiring minds want to know! Also, there's no such thing as "Torah law." You do realize that orthodox Jews would not view kindly a gentile woman who had a child out of wedlock and who has married someone of a different race and religion. Good luck climbing into bed with religious zealots of different faiths! I'm sure you'll all get on like a house on fire!

The belief that who is and isn't family is, can be, or should be a "choice" is a secular humanist belief - subjective, values-laden, and ideological. Why should we have to treat your beliefs as if they were somehow more factual than anyone else's?

Why should secular humanists be allowed to push their beliefs on the rest of us?

Gay marriage necessarily teaches that biology is irrelevant in determining what is and is not a "family" - and that the act of believing otherwise is 'bigotry'. That means that every religion in the world that actually honors its own teachings will be guilty of "bigotry" and their beliefs will be outlawed by the state - so that a new and novel definition of family can be forced onto people against their will: the idea that a family is whatever the state says it is, and that the state has the power to take parenthood away from one person and give it to another without meeting any sort of "child's best interest" test or standard.

(In fact, the "child's best interest" standard must necessarily be turned upside down, to support an outcome where a child's best interest is *sacrificed* in the name of "equality" - reducing the child to the status of thing one is entitled to, rather than a person with needs of his or her own.)
