I’m here in New Hampshire and attended the Christie endorsement event. I was struck by how much emphasis Christie put on experience and electability. Both he and Romney also hit the Pastor Jeffress issue very hard. Christie said that any campaign that associates itself with such a point of view “is beneath the office of the president.” Romney called on Perry “to repudiate the sentiment and the remarks made by that pastor.” Perry has already said he doesn’t agree that Mormonism is a cult, but Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom explained after the event that the Romney campaign considers that insufficient because what was most troubling was that a Perry supporter wants to “disqualify another candidate on the basis of religion.” Fehrnstrom said that Perry must repudiate not just the Jeffress remarks but Jeffress himself.
