If I were the King of England I’d give Peter Hitchens a peerage — a real, hereditary one, not one of those picayune “life peerages.” He’s got three kids, ample foundation for a dynasty. Alas, owing to a mix-up at the College of Arms back in the 15th century, the Derbyshires lost their rightful claim, and I am now only 11,041,875th in line to the Throne. Words of praise will therefore have to suffice. I try to read every word Hitch Minor writes, and of course plagiarize him shamelessly.
Here he is writing about Japan.
I have never, airport stopovers aside, been to Japan, and can never make up my mind what to think about the place. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays I think they have got everything gloriously right; Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays I think they have got everything hideously wrong; Sundays I just don’t know what to think. Peter seems to be of the same mind, or minds.
Oh: and, for tomorrow, Happy Birthday, Peter!
