The 11 a.m. services tomorrow at two of my favorite churches — St. Mary the Virgin near Times Square, and St. Thomas on Fifth Avenue — will feature the same work, the motet “Exsultate Justi” by the Franciscan friar/composer Lodovico Viadana (1560-1627). Not only this particular work, but the very name of the composer, was unknown to me until I saw it in the church bulletins — so I consulted Google, and discovered that this is indeed a lovely piece of music. (It’s performed here by the Adoremus Slovak Choir. It’s short — only a couple of minutes — and well worth your time.)
A happy Reformation Sunday! And to Traditionalist Catholics, a happy Feast of Christ the King. . . .
