Herman Cain denied today that he had ever sexually harassed anyone.
“I have never sexually harassed anyone,” Cain told Fox News in an interview this morning. “Yes, I was falsely accused while I was at the National Restaurant association and I say falsely because it turned out, after the investigation to be baseless.”
Asked if he had ever settled in response to sexual harassment charges, Cain denied that he had done so, although he acknowledged the National Restaurant Association might have.
“Outside of the Restaurant Association, absolutely not,” Cain said. “If the Restaurant Association did a settlement, I wasn’t even aware of it, and I hope it wasn’t for much, because nothing happened. So if there was a settlement, it was handled by some of the other offices that worked for me at the association, so the answer is absolutely not.”
“If more allegations come, I assure you, people will simply make them up,” he added. “I was aware of the false accusation that took place at the Restaurant Association and then when we were asked for me to comment, they wanted it to be from two anonymous sources. We weren’t going to go and chase anonymous sources.”
Speaking about the Politicopiece, Cain urged people to read to the end.
“But take a look at the end of the article is what I encourage people to do,” he said. “And look at the people who have attested to my character and my integrity.”
Really? If two women are going to make an accusation that could take out a leading candidate for the Presidency, why in the heck should their identities be shielded by the press outlet tossing those accusations out into the realm of public and media speculation? That is total BULL. If someone has an accusation, then let them step up to the mic and openly talk about it. Hiding their identity just prolongs how long the dark cloud of uncertainty is allowed to hover over Cain. This is M.O. of a false political smear.
If those women cannot own their accusations against Cain, then no one should listen to them.
These two women aren't making this allegation now, they made it in 1998 when Cain was CEO of the Restaurant lobbying group. These two women apparently "settled" their harrasment case against Cain at that time, and the settlement most likely included them agreeing to remain silent. And any legal settlement where money was paid would require every executive in the Restaurant Association to agree to it (General Counsil, CFO, Controller, etc....), so there are many poeple who would have known about this who could have leaked it. It is highly unlikely that this story is coming from these two women.
hey..... the two women made the accusations YEARS ago, not now. Don't try to make this political as if they just came out now to hurt his campaign. They are probably as upset about this coming out now as he is.
They should remain anonymous because that is what the agreement was that Cain and the Restaurant Association made with them and more than likely it was for the protection of Cain not the women involved.
Politico already did that, in case you did not notice, and I'm sure you have already noted your opinion over there, right?
I mean, in addition to trolling around on conservative sites?
And Politico would not at all be bound, as a purported "news" outlet, by any condition of anonymity contained in any settlement agreement.
Lastly, you prove your sophomoric status goes beyond your current college credit level, by stating that any condition of anonymity would be designed to protect the accused, and not the accusers.
That is about 179 degrees out of phase. I leave you but one degree of wiggle room on the .000000000001% chance that you have read the actual settlement agreement.
No one is listening to them. Besides, Cain already admitted that he was "falsely accused" and that those accusations were “determined to be baseless.” External Link
Solid Advice: Never allow anyone to own you based on what they claim to know. He said, she said.
Accusations of sexual misconduct are as overused as are accusations of racism .. and too often are thrown around for profit, for intimidation, or for payback. All this tells me is someone on the left really wants Romney to be our guy.
They make the unstated accusations by unnamed sources. Just a smear.
Then they cover themselves by putting the real detail at the end of the story, where everyone who knew Cain and worked with Cain, supports him.
While this is not a criminal case, these accusations are a violation of the spirit of the 6th Amendment which says, one must be "informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him."
We've seen this movie before. How much do you want to bet these two women -- if they even exist -- will turn out to be disgruntled employees who couldn't perform their jobs, and decided to play legal lotto with a harassment complaint looking for a payout?
So Cain's story is this : "I was accused once and only once; there was no basis for the accusation, and I don't know anything about any settlement the Restaurant Ass'n may have entered into." Why didn't he say so at the outset? Why the ambiguity about whether we are dealing with one accusation or more than one? Is it really plausible that his employer would settle a sexual harrassment claim against him without his knowledge?
The accusations against Cain don't seem serious, but neither does his effort to deal with them. Nearly everything Herman Cain says and does demonstrates that he isn't equipped to wage a presidential campaign.
I have seen this twice now, and it's nonsense. The media didn't "drop" it; we heard about the issue the whole campaign. Obama had to give a 40 minutes "speech on race" to address the issue. On what planet did the media "drop the issue"?
This is not the first time Cain addressed the allegations. A reporter asked him if he'd ever been accused of sexual harrassment and he responded by asking if the reporter had ever been so accused. His campaign has made several other efforts to respond, all of them incompetent.
Apparently you're emotionally invested in Cain's campaign. That's a mistake. You have to get past the denial and move on through the other stages of grief. Cain won't be the Republican nominee and this story, silly as it is, illustrates why.
Don't let the time line of events get in the way, huh?
Anyway, what does not seem serious -- in the slightest -- is your comment. No offense, but you've got the time line totally upside down. That undermines your conclusion.
What time line are you babbling about? Cain has been responding, both in person and through representatives, to this story since last night. He's made a hash of it. This latest response still doesn't add up. There's only so much damage such a silly story can do. Cain has done his best to maximize it.
The lesson is that Cain hasn't got a campaign organization worthy of the name and he has no idea how to play the game himself. When team Cain is In damage control mode that becomes painfully obvious. You can screw your eyes shut, plug your ears with your fingers and chant your mantra so you can't see or hear the obvious. It won't do any good. Cain won't win and you need to find another candidate.

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI believe In order to settle the two accusers signed confidentiality agreements. They can't discuss the case or THEY could be sued.

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThe women probably withdrew their complaint after Cain explained that he was "just joking".

He did say so at the outset. This is the first time HE has addressed the complaints- complaints that surfaced about 14 HOURS ago.
Your post is ridiculous. If cain didn't get on twitter 10 seconds after thin allegations from unnamed women he's somehow guilty?
What a bunch of BS

Besides, Mr. Cain said he didn't. That's enough and we should drop it.
After all, President Obama said he never heard Rev Wright's remarks and the press dropped that issue...
